The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has arrested two Australian Customs and Border Protection Service officials for matters relating to corruption, and for their involvement in conspiring to import illicit goods into Australia.
A 48-year-old Frenchs Forest man and a 38-year-old Caringbah man were arrested today (22 March 2013) following an eight month investigation by the AFP.
The Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity (ACLEI) is aware of, and has been monitoring, the progress of the investigation.
The AFP executed search warrants at two residential addresses in Sydney today.
The two men were subsequently charged with the following offences:
- Conspiracy to unlawfully import a tier 1 good, contrary to section 233BAA(4) of the Customs Act 1901, by virtue of section 11.5(1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995;
- Inciting the unlawful importation of a tier 2 good, contrary to section 233BAB(5) of the Customs Act 1901, by virtue of section 11.4(1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995;
- Abuse of public office, contrary to section 142.2(1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995;
- Receive a corrupting benefit, contrary to section 142.1(3) of the Criminal Code Act 1995;
- Failure to store ammunition in secured locked storage, contrary to section 41(c) of the Firearms Act 1996.
The men are scheduled to appear in Parramatta Local Court on 23 March 2013.
As these arrests relate to an ongoing investigation, it would not be appropriate for the AFP to comment further at this time.
