The redeveloped Australian Institute of Police Management in Sydney has been officially opened by the Governor General Quentin Bryce AC CVO.

The site, which has been the home of senior Australian police leadership development for over 50 years, has been redeveloped to preserve its unique environmental aspects and heritage features, as well as increasing the capacity of the AIPM to develop police leaders.

AFP Commissioner and Chairman of the AIPM Board of Control Tony Negus said that the AIPM is a vital piece of infrastructure for the ongoing education of Australia’s senior law enforcement officers.

“The redeveloped AIPM is a world class learning facility that supports all of Australia and New Zealand’s law enforcement agencies. The learning and networking conducted at the AIPM boosts the skills and effectiveness of Australian, New Zealand and international police officers,” Commissioner Negus said.

At the official opening, AFP Chief Operating Officer and Chair of the Project Steering Committee, Andrew Wood said the updated facility will continue to provide a central venue for senior police officers to learn, collaborate and research the best ways to lead law enforcement agencies.

“Effective leadership is a critical component for law enforcement agencies to best serve their communities,” Mr Wood said.

Since its establishment in 1960, more than 6,000 police have attended the AIPM. The recent upgrades will allow many more to benefit from the institute’s expertise and experience in the future. The facility is also a key education provider for members of many overseas law enforcement agencies.

The Commonwealth government committed funding towards the full redevelopment of the heritage listed site in Manly.
