Notes from the governmental report “Singapore Cyber Landscape 2017” reflects a complex global cybersecurity landscape and escalating threats

Singapore is a highly connected nation, and its cybersecurity scenarios closely mirror that of its neighbors and the world.

In 2017, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) reported that 5,430 cybercrime cases were reported. The Singapore government report “Singapore Cyber Landscape 2017” was just released, and it showed that 3 main threats persist and are rising rapidly:

1) Website defacement (2,040 websites defaced in 2017);
2) Phishing (23,420 phishing URLs with a Singapore-link were found in 2017);
3) Malware infections (2,700 botnet drones and 750 C&C servers found here in 2017).

What are the ways to fight these rising threats here and in the Asia region? There are 2 approaches:

1) Cyber-defense (defending against Gen 5 and earlier cybersecurity threats);
2) Forensics and secure software development (or what is termed “DevSecOps”).
