Australian Federal Police (AFP) Commissioner Tony Negus will today officially open the new AFP Aviation Operations Centre at the Brisbane Airport.

The Brisbane facility is the seventh to be unveiled across Australia’s major airports as part of the Federal Government’s $200 million commitment to strengthen aviation security across the country.

The new facilities at the Brisbane Airport include an Emergency Operations Centre, Airport Police Operations Centre, muster rooms and training facilities, exhibit handling facilities and interview rooms.

AFP Commissioner Tony Negus said the enhanced facilities will strengthen the AFP’s position as the primary law enforcement agency at Brisbane Airport.

“In an ever changing aviation environment, the AFP remains committed to providing high visibility and preventative style policing in our airports to ensure the safety and security of all Australians and the travelling public” Commissioner Negus said.

“The AFP is a central part of the law enforcement frontline in keeping Australia safe and remains committed to our role in deterring and targeting criminal activities.”

The AFP takes a whole-of-government approach to aviation security, working closely and in collaboration with partner agencies such as the Department of Infrastructure and Transport, Department of Immigration and Citizenship, Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, state and territory police.

To date, new AFP Aviation facilities (both office accommodation and canine facilities) have been built at Adelaide, Sydney, Darwin, Gold Coast and Canberra, with construction currently underway at Cairns, Melbourne and Perth.

The remaining AFP facilities are scheduled to be completed towards the end of 2014.
