EfficientIP’s 2018 DNS Threat Report reveals that the cost of a single DNS attack on Asia Pacific businesses nearly doubled over the past year, prompting a need for better protection

Inadequately protected Domain Name Systems (DNS) are leaving Asia Pacific businesses vulnerable to cyberattacks with significant financial consequences according to EfficientIP’s 2018 DNS Threat Report. In their fourth annual report, EfficientIP found that the cost of a single DNS attack nearly doubled, costing more than US$ 639,000 for businesses in the region.

EfficientIP APAC Territorial Manager Nick Itta met with and provided counsel to key stakeholders in the public and private sectors at the Mobile World Congress in Shanghai this week. He stated, “The Asia Pacific is the fastest growing technology market and home to several of the world’s largest companies in the sector. Network security underpins these businesses ability to grow and succeed. There’s still a gap in DNS protection – especially in this region. In 2017, we saw a great ordeal of network attacks impacting APAC businesses. This threat will only become more eminent without sufficient intervention.”

Below are key findings pertaining to the Asia Pacific from EfficientIP’s 2018 DNS Threat Report:

  • APAC organizations recognize the need for and importance of protecting DNS: 40% of organizations in APAC are prioritizing DNS analysis for data protection – more than their North American and European peers. In India alone, nearly half (47%) believe analyzing DNS transactions is crucial for data protection.
  • The Asia Pacific faces the largest number of DNS tunneling and DDoS attacks: The APAC region faces the largest number of DNS tunneling attacks (24%) and DNS DDoS attacks (23%) compared to global statistics. In 2017, Singapore was the most affected by DNS DDoS attacks at 29%, with India falling not far behind at 27%. Phishing attacks hit India the hardest at 45%, compared to a regional average of 38%. India was also the most subjected to DNS Tunneling attacks at 28%.
  • Monetary loss is not the only impact: DNS attacks also lead to cloud service downtime, impacting APAC the most at 46%. Indian organizations suffered the most from cloud service downtime at 61%. Data theft in the region also remains a significant concern with 31% of organizations facing attacks.

In response to this, EfficientIP recently opened an office in Singapore. This will enable the DNS security solutions company to work closely as a partner to its clients in the region. “Our decision to expand our operations in the Asia Pacific demonstrates EfficientIP’s commitment to the region. We want to play a role in accelerating Asia’s economic growth by ensuring that networks remain safe, secure, and supportive of the organizations that they belong to,” said Nick Itta.
