Japanese technology investment group SoftBank is reportedly exploring the acquisition of global security services provider Allied Universal, in a potential multibillion-dollar transaction that could accelerate the application of artificial intelligence and robotics across the physical security industry.
The Financial Times reported on 17 October 2026 that SoftBank was in preliminary discussions to acquire Allied Universal, the US-headquartered security group that also owns international security provider G4S.
The potential transaction could value Allied Universal at approximately US$30 billion, including debt, although no agreement has been announced and discussions remain at an early stage.
Neither SoftBank nor Allied Universal has publicly confirmed an acquisition agreement. SoftBank declined to comment on the reported discussions, and there is no certainty that a transaction will proceed.
The reported interest comes as SoftBank founder and chief executive Masayoshi Son increases the group’s investment in artificial intelligence, autonomous robotics and the infrastructure required to support emerging AI applications.
SoftBank has identified physical AI, where artificial intelligence enables machines and robots to interact autonomously with the physical environment, as an important component of its long-term technology strategy.
In October 2025, SoftBank announced an agreement to acquire ABB’s robotics business for US$5.375 billion, bringing an established industrial robotics manufacturer into its expanding portfolio of AI-related investments.
Announcing that agreement, Son said:
“SoftBank’s next frontier is Physical AI.”
The company said the acquisition would combine its AI capabilities with ABB’s industrial robotics expertise, manufacturing technologies and international customer base.
SoftBank’s existing robotics investments include SoftBank Robotics Group, Berkshire Grey, AutoStore, Agile Robots and Skild AI, reflecting its interest in applying autonomous systems across industrial, commercial and logistics environments.
In March 2026, SoftBank Robotics America also announced the acquisition of Green Clean Commercial and the establishment of Smart Building X, an initiative designed to integrate robotics, predictive intelligence and automation into commercial facilities management.
The company described the development as an opportunity to combine traditional labour-intensive services with AI-enabled operations and data-driven management.
Allied Universal represents a potentially significant extension of this strategy into the global security services market.
According to its corporate information, Allied Universal operates in more than 100 countries and employs approximately 770,000 people. Its international operations include G4S, which became part of Allied Universal following a major acquisition completed in 2021.
The company provides guarding, security technology, risk management and facilities services across commercial, industrial, government and critical infrastructure environments.
Allied Universal has also been expanding its use of digital technologies, including its HELIAUS platform, which supports security operations through data collection, reporting, analytics and operational intelligence.
An acquisition by SoftBank could create opportunities to combine established guarding operations with autonomous mobile robots, AI-enabled monitoring, intelligent facilities management and predictive security systems.
Such applications could include automated patrols, remote inspection, incident detection and the integration of robotic systems with existing security operations centres.
However, these potential applications remain strategic possibilities rather than confirmed elements of an acquisition or operational integration plan.
Any large-scale deployment of autonomous security technologies would also raise questions concerning safety, regulatory compliance, workforce implications, privacy and the allocation of responsibility between human security personnel and automated systems.
For the global security industry, the reported discussions highlight growing interest in combining traditional physical security services with advanced automation and artificial intelligence.
The potential acquisition would bring together SoftBank’s technology investment portfolio and one of the world’s largest security services workforces, creating a substantial platform for the possible deployment of robotics and AI across security and facilities management operations.
For markets including Australia and Southeast Asia, where G4S and Allied Universal maintain established operations, the implications could extend to security service delivery, technology procurement, workforce development and competition between traditional guarding providers and technology-led security businesses.
The reported transaction remains preliminary, with no confirmed purchase price, timetable or binding agreement.
Nevertheless, SoftBank’s publicly stated investment strategy demonstrates the group’s growing focus on physical AI and robotics, with the security industry potentially emerging as another major market for the commercial deployment of autonomous technologies.
